Fasting Schedule for Women: Windows, Hours, and When Not to Fast

By Samantha Linden, MEd, DBA · Fast Like a Girl Certified Coach

Common fasting windows explained

A fasting window is the time you go without food. An eating window is the time you eat. Common lengths include:

  • 13 hours: a gentle starting point that fits most lives
  • 15 to 17 hours: often used to build metabolic flexibility
  • 24 hours or more: occasional and advanced, not for daily use

A sample cycle-aware schedule

Here is one example based on Fast Like a Girl principles. Your exact plan depends on your body, health history, and goals.

  • Days 1 to 10: 13 to 15 hour fasts work well for many women
  • Days 11 to 15 (around ovulation): shorter fasts, with more fiber and vegetables
  • Days 16 to 19: moderate fasts are often fine again
  • Days 20 to your period: gentle or no fasting, with nourishing carbs

When not to fast

Fasting isn't right for everyone or for every season of life. Don't fast, or only fast with medical guidance, if you are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Recovering from or living with disordered eating
  • Managing diabetes, especially on medication
  • Under 18, underweight, or recovering from illness

Make it fit real life

The best schedule is one you can actually follow. Plan longer fasts for lighter days, keep social meals flexible, and use your energy and sleep to judge how it's going. The free Fasting 101 Guide gives you a simple traffic-light system for when to fast and when not to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fasting schedule for beginners?
Start with a 12 to 13 hour overnight fast, such as 7 p.m. to 8 a.m., a few days a week. Add time slowly once that feels easy.
Should women fast every day?
Many women do better with variety than with the same fast every day. Changing your fasting lengths through the week or month is a key idea in hormone-friendly fasting.
